Overview

Dr. Mitchell Hicks is a licensed clinical psychologist and Clinical Professional Counselor who has over 10 years of specialized education and experience in working with individuals, families, couples, and groups on a variety of presenting concerns. He earned a Bachelors degree in psychology from Anderson University, a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Indianapolis and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. He completed his predoctoral internship in clinical psychology through the School of Professional Psychology at Wright State University, where he provided outpatient psychotherapy and assessment in a college counseling center and community mental health center. He completed a formal postdoctoral residency in clinical and correctional psychology through the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.

Throughout his master’s and doctoral studies, Dr. Hicks developed a strong foundation in the general knowledge and skills required to work with a wide range of clients from various age groups and backgrounds. He has trained in several community mental health centers and college counseling centers. His skills were expanded as he obtained advanced training in forensic and correctional psychology through work in Illinois' state psychiatric prison for men and in a specialized forensic program through the Department of Human Services. These and earlier experiences have provided him with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide competent and compassionate care to persons who fall anywhere on the spectrum of mental health and distress.

Dr. Hicks is an Affiliated Staff member at Alexian Brothers Behaviorial Health Hospital in Hoffman Estates.

Personal Statement

As you prepare to embark on this journey of psychotherapy, it is important that you have a guide who is well-versed in psychological practice yet respects you as the expert on yourself. Thank you for considering me to walk with you.

I am skilled in the use of both shorter- and longer-term models of treatment, and it is important that together we determine the appropriate length of treatment. Whether you are seeking support as you negotiate a major life transition or your concerns have been life-long and complex struggles, I seek to develop a relationship with you that is characterized by warmth, compassion, authenticity, and safety in which you feel understood as a whole person rather than just a diagnosis. In this context, exploration of emotional wounds, fears, and disappointments as well as life's joys, pleasures, and surprises can be explored. As clients courageously take on this work, they frequently find that their disturbing symptoms improve and relationships with family and friends become more meaningful and less encumbered by emotional baggage.
